This is the real icing on the cake for the birthday celebrations of the M division. The lightweight BMW M4 CSL with the most powerful 6-cylinder ever created by the technicians from Munich. And with a design that refers to the historical icon from 1974.

BMW 3.0 CSL – 2022 The BMW 3.0 CSL is an even more extreme version of the most powerful BMW M4 CSL to date. The shape of the bumpers and the hand-applied tricolor refer to the iconic coupe from 1973.

The BMW M division is particularly active this year. He is celebrating his fiftieth birthday. And so, in recent months, it has brought us such “tastes” as the premier sharp BMW M3 Touring station wagon, the sharpened BMW M4 CSL and the new BMW M2 coupe. However, it does not end there, because at the end it pulls a real ace up its sleeve – the BMW 3.0 CSL. Connoisseurs of automotive history and sports know that this is a cult BMW that reigned in the European Road Vehicle Championship from 1973 to 1979. These circuit specials were accompanied by the civil version of the same name, which was created for the needs of homologation and which became a true legend. The letters CSL (Coupe, Sport, Lightweight construction) demonstrated the main characteristics of this lightweight sports coupe. Today, he returns to the scene and does not change his philosophy.

The new BMW 3.0 CSL was created on the basis of the already sharp BMW M4 CSL, but it is even lighter, even more powerful and even more emotional, because the design evokes the historical model. We’ve got all-new bumpers with circular side vents, all-new kidneys touched by the lights, widened fenders, 20- and 21-inch center-nut forged wheels, widened side skirts, and also two spoiler wings – one on the edge of the roof and one on hood. An interesting detail is the accentuated “Hoffmeister knick” curve on the side window or the retro BMW logos. The whole thing is complemented by a specific white Alpine body paint accompanied by the tricolor of the M division. The manual painting takes up to six days and takes place in eight stages.

BMW 3.0 CSL – 2022 The two rear wings are also a reference to the historical model. This time made of plastic reinforced with carbon fibers. The titanium exhaust tips are integrated in the carbon diffuser.

What is not seen is the widespread deployment of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). Both bonnets, roof, aerodynamic elements including the diffuser are made of this light material. The titanium exhaust is also lighter. However, the rear seats and sound insulation also fell victim to the degreasing treatment. The cabin is full of carbon trim and Alcantara, which covers the M Carbon shell seats and steering wheel. The gear lever has a white head with the number 50 and the series number is removed in front of the passenger, because the BMW 3.0 CSL will only be produced in a strictly limited number. Instead of rear seats, the BMW 3.0 CSL has integrated helmet compartments. The purist nature is also demonstrated by the seats, which can only be adjusted in the workshop using a three-stage screw connection.

Crazy inline six cylinder 3.0 TwinPower Turbo... Photo: BMW

BMW M4 CSL – 2022 The insane 3.0 TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine was tuned up to 412 kW. This is not far from the circuit BMW M4 GT3 (441 kW). However, its connection with the manual transmission is fascinating.

The technology is also fascinating. Under the hood is the most powerful 6-cylinder ever built in Munich. The 3.0 liter in-line unit has its technological roots in the DTM circuit championships. The dry crankcase or forged crankshaft is complemented by a cylinder head made using 3D printing. While it gives 405 kW in the BMW M4 CSL, this time it is seven kilowatts more, i.e. 412 kW. The torque is paradoxically 100 Nm lower, but it has its own logic. The BMW 3.0 CSL is equipped exclusively with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, which is a real rarity these days. Downshifting is assisted by the automatic intermediate gas, and the transfer of power to asphalt is assisted by the active M Differential in the rear axle gearbox, which can transfer 100% of the drive torque to only one of the wheels.

The interior is downright purist. Shellfish... Photo: BMW

BMW 3.0 CSL – 2022 The interior is downright purist. For example, shell seats can only be adjusted in the workshop. And the back ones are completely missing.

The chassis is literally a showcase of the technologies of the M division. There is a special front suspension with a double strut, a 5-link rear suspension, electronically controlled shock absorbers, adaptive M Servotronic steering with variable transmission, and a carbon-ceramic brake system with adjustable intensity. The discs have a diameter of 400 and 380 mm, respectively. All systems were fine-tuned by BMW M on the Nürburgring reference circuit. More fun behind the wheel is provided by the ability to adjust the reactions of the anti-skid system. Up to ten degrees are available. Unfortunately, BMW did not publish the most important thing – dynamic parameters. So we do not know the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h or the maximum speed. However, if the BMW M4 CSL sprints to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, the lightweight 3.0 CSL will certainly pull back a tenth of that.

We don’t know the weight either, but we can estimate it thanks to the power weight figure of 2.9 kg/hp at 1,680 kg. Only 50 examples of the BMW 3.0 CSL will be produced. Production will require a large proportion of manual work. Due to the complexity of the processes at the factory in Dingolfingen, each BMW 3.0 CSL goes through eight assembly cycles on the same number of production stations, a process that takes up to 10 days. 30 specially trained employees are responsible for this. Once completed, each specimen undergoes a multi-step quality control and approval process. Only then can he head to the customer. The price will certainly be astronomical, but we do not suppose that BMW would have a problem finding customers. It is already a collector’s rarity, the value of which will only increase from day one.
